Ensure your iPhone is running the
current version of iOS, then restart it.
With a good Wi-Fi or mobile network
connection, open Contacts and select
the person to whom you want to send
a message. Open their card and check
that you have their details entered
correctly. Most important here is that
their iPhone number is recorded there
as an iPhone.
If Messages reports that it’s still
waiting for activation, and you’ve
already tried to activate it more than
24 hours ago, contact Apple Support,
preferably using the free eponymous
app from the App Store.
Check your phone’s time zone is set
correctly in Settings > General > Date &
Time, and that the date and time are
also correct. Also check that you
haven’t installed any VPN software
that might be blocking network ports
80 (TCP), 443 (TCP), or 5223 (TCP)
— FaceTime uses additional ports to
those — and that any firewall operating
on your Wi–Fi connection isn’t blocking
them either.
Verify you’re using the correct
Apple ID and password by signing in
to that account at appleid.apple.com.
If that works, go to Settings > [your
name] and check that you’re using that
same Apple ID. If you’re not, sign out
from that account and sign in to the
Apple ID that has been activated.
If you still can’t send your message,
you’ll need to contact Apple Support.

Messages errors
I can’t get Messages to work, although I have reset my iPhone and logged out all devices
from my iCloud account. Even after doing this all I get is an error, and I can’t send any
message. How can I fix this?

Quick–fire
questions
& answers

HOW DO I CORRECT MY
iPHONE’S CLOCK?
Ensure your phone has
a good connection to the
internet, then go to Settings
> General > Date & Time and
turn off Set Automatically.
Wait a few seconds, then
turn it on again. This should
force your phone to resync
with its online time server,
and show the correct time.

HOW CAN I SCAN
A QR CODE?
First check this feature
is turned on in Settings
> Camera > Scan QR Codes,
then open the Camera app
in Photo or Square mode
and position a QR code
centrally in the live view. You
may be prompted to move
closer or further away. Once
the camera has focused,
a notification will appear.
Tap it to act on the data in
the code — which is typically
a web address.

In Messages’ settings, the iMessage item at the top is
critical. If you can’t get it to turn on, contact Apple Support.
