HOW CAN I COPY STYLED
TEXT FROM A PDF FILE?
Unfortunately, PDF provides
very limited access to style
info, due to its complex
format. If you want to retain
more than is normally
copied, use a tool to export
the PDF content to Word or
Rich Text Format, and
try copying from the
converted doc.

CAN I DETECT AND
CONVERT OLD JPEG
2000 IMAGES?
Support for these will be
withdrawn with loss of
QuickTime 7 support in
macOS 10.15. Such files
should have a .jp2 extension,
which you can search for
using a Smart Folder in
Finder. Open them in Preview
and choose File > Export to
save them in regular JPEG
or PNG format. Or, use
a specialist app like
GraphicConverter
or Affinity Photo.

If Pages has saved previous versions, you
can access those through that document. If
it hadn’t been damaged, the easy way to get
to a version would be to open it in Pages
then choose File > Revert To. If you can’t
open the document, though, macOS doesn’t
provide alternative means. Instead you’ll

need a tool to browse, open and save
any versions, such as VersionsManager
(free, corecode.io) or Revisionist (free,
eclecticlight.co). Save as many of the recent
versions of that document as you can find,
and use Pages to step through them to
locate those that it can open correctly.

> Can I recover versions of a broken doc?
When I try to open a large Pages document, the app reports an error and can’t go any
further. I can’t find an unbroken copy in my backup or iCloud. How can I recover this?

The simplest solution to this issue might
appear to be a shared Photos library kept
in a new folder of /Users/Shared/Pictures.
However, there are some problems which
don’t make that a good choice. First, you
would need to give all users full read and
write permissions for that library, which
would give them the ability to delete as well
as add images.
But most importantly, Photos can only
open one of its libraries at a time. So to add
images to a shared library, users would need
to export them from their personal library,
switch library to the shared one, then
import the images into that.

Alternatively, you could set up a shared
drop box in /Users/Shared, or /Users/[your
name]/Public/Drop Box, into which your
family puts exported images for you to add
to a special family Photos library, perhaps.
Oddly, the simplest way to achieve this
is with iCloud’s shared albums (bit.ly/
mfshralb), or a shared Family album
within Family Sharing (bit.ly/mffamalb),
provided everyone’s iCloud accounts are
connected using that. However, then shared
photos will be copied from your Mac to
iCloud and back to the same Mac, which is
hardly efficient. But it makes the shared
library available to your iOS devices too.

> Sharing local Photos libraries
Our family iMac has four different user accounts on it. How can we share selected
photos between those different accounts, using the Photos app?

Revisionist can open any doc and show
you all saved versions, even if the latest
is broken.
You can preview any of the listed versions of a document, and when you’ve found the one that you want,
open it in its original app.
