The fundamentals
Choose Apple > System Preferences.
At the top right of the new window, click the
Notifications icon. Scroll through the list of
apps until you find the one whose notifications
you want to change. Click on its name to select.
Banner or alert
To the right, set how notifications from
this app will behave. A banner disappears after
a few seconds. An alert stays on screen until
you dismiss it yourself. Pick None to stop the
app using this method of notification.
NOTIFICATIONS IN macOS
can be a very useful tool for
keeping up to date with things.
You can be informed of, say,
an upcoming appointment, deadline, or
incoming message.
However, notiĽcations can also be
a frustrating distraction. For example,
if you work in an environment that uses
multiple email inboxes for diļerent
projects and you use Outlook with
notiĽcations for incoming messages,
message previews might pop up on screen
every minute or two. No one needs that.
Tailor your Mac’s notifications
If you’re plagued by continual interruptions, it’s time to take charge
Common controls for notiĽcations
across all apps are found in System
Preferences’ NotiĽcations pane, but
macOS also allows for other settings
that are controlled elsewhere. For
example, Safari allows websites to send
you notiĽcations. And if you’ve clicked
“Allow” on several sites without thinking,
you may Ľnd yourself swamped.
But fear not, here we’ll show you
exactly how and where to take control
of your notiĽcations and get them
working exactly the way you want them
to. KENNY HEMPHILL
GENIUS TIP
