Explore your usage
In System Preferences, click iCloud.
You’ll see an overview of your account’s limit
and current usage. Click Manage and you get
a more detailed breakdown of what’s taking
up space, so you can plan accordingly.

Switch your plan
The quickest way to deal with a lack of
iCloud space is to upgrade your plan — click
Buy More Storage to do so. This is also where
you go to downgrade — prior to that, ensure
your Mac has enough space for your data.

CLOUD STORAGE MEANS total
convenience. Content saved
to iCloud is available on any
device that’s signed in to your
account. It’s a great way to store and
access everything, from calendar data
to getting at whatever is on your Mac’s
desktop by using the Files app on iOS.
Unfortunately, though, Apple only
provides a miserly 5GB of space for free.
Upping that to 50GB costs 99 cents per
month. 200GB and 2TB cost $2.99 and
$9.99 per month respectively.

Manage iCloud storage

Make the most of your iCloud gigabytes with these handy tips

The problem is if you hit your limit,
things stop working. iOS devices may no
longer backup, apps and documents will
stop syncing data. Apple will, of course,
suggest you throw more money its way.
However, there is an alternative to
simply paying more. If you want to keep
costs down but retain the advantages of
iCloud, look at managing whatever space
you have already. By making use of our
tips, you can minimize what you spend
without eradicating the beneĽts of using
the system. CRAIG GRANNELL

GENIUS TIP

To avoid an errant
massive file taking up
space when syncing
Desktop and Documents
to iCloud, periodically
scan those folders with
an app like DaisyDisk
or GrandPerspective.
