One of the greatest fascinating
singers, creative music composer
and director, Sachin Dev Burman
also remained one of the most
popular and successful characters
of Bollywood for his mesmerizing
melodies. His composition have
been sung by great singers like
Lata Mangeshkar, Md. Rafi, Geeta
Dutt, Manna Dey, Kishore Kumar,
Hemant Kumar, Asha Bhoshle,
Mukesh and Talat Mahmood. He
himself also sang songs in about
14 Hindi and 13 Bangla films
and composed music for over
100 movies. Lyrics composed by
him not only spread inspirational
message to the mankind but also
painted true picture of life of the
common people.
Heavenly musical creations
of Sachin Dev Burman still lead
emotions of millions of hearts. So
he became immortal and is loved
by all.
Hailing from the royal dynasty
of Tripura Kumar Sachin Dev
Burman ruled the music world
through his lifelong Sadhana,
tireless perseverance and building
of an imitable and pleasing
personality. He is the best gift of
Tripura to Bharat and a symbol of
Bharatiya Sanskriti.
Such a true jewel of India and
an ambassador of the cultural
world to humanity should be
conferred with “Bharat Ratna”
award posthumously; I propose,
pray and place for your nationalist
consideration.
I am sure the Soul of Bharat
will dance in joy again with the
announcement of conferring
“Bharat Ratna” to this beloved son
of Bharat Mata and a real jewel.’
Speaking to Eclectic NorthEast,
Chakraborty shared, ‘I received
a slip from the Prime Minister’s


Office (PMO) indicating that
my letter has been received.
However, they did not work on the
matter as the Lok Sabha election
preoccupied them at that point of
time. Nevertheless, I have been
told they are looking into the
matter now as the polls are over.’

A Look at Burman’s Life
This great music maestro was
born to Nabadwip Chandra Dev
Burman and Nirupama Devi on
1 Oct, 1906 in Comilla district of
present-day Bangladesh. Comilla
was then a feudal estate of the royal
Manikya dynasty of ‘Undivided
Tripura’. Nabadwip Chandra Dev
Burman was the son of Maharaja
Ishan Chandra Manikya and heir
apparent to the throne of Tripura.
However, the Maharaja’s untimely
demise had a telling effect on the

fortunes of Nabadwip Chandra.
His uncle, Bir Chandra staked
claim to the throne as Nabadwip
was a minor. There was a familial
strife between Navadwip and his
uncle, Bir Chandra. Ultimately,
Bir Chandra carried off the palm
and ascended the throne of
Tripura and assumed the surname
‘Manikya’, a titular privilege of the
monarchs of Tripura. Nabadwip
had to compromise and was sent
to Comilla. This maltreatment
would later have an impact on the
mind of Nabadwip son’s Sachin.
Comilla was then a hotbed of
cultural activities. It produced
numerous legends with Ustad
Alauddin Khan standing first
among equals. Young Sachin’s
first association with music was
through the famous ‘Tipperah
Flute’. He often used to sit on the
