PUNJAB DELEGATION IN MEGHALAYA


A


five-member delegation from Punjab recently
met Meghalaya Home Minister James K.
Sangma, urging him to ensure one-time resolution
of the issues concerning the Sikh settlers in Shillong.
The delegation, led by Punjab Minister Sukhjinder
Singh Randhawa, went to Meghalaya after reports
emerged that members of the Sikh community were
being told to leave the State by the authorities. It
requested the High Powered Committee (HPC), set up
by the Meghalaya government, to take into account all
genuine concerns of the Sikh families before reaching
any conclusion. The delegation also requested the
Home Minister to ensure security of the Sikh families
who have been residing in the Punjabi Lane area of
Shillong for decades.

NO PLASTICS IN NAGALAND

ontinuing the policy for ‘restricting the use of
plastics’, Nagaland government announced a
total ban on single-use plastic in the State. With the
view to eradicate the menace of plastic, which has
serious effects on the environment and ecology, the
State cabinet during its meeting held on June 10, 2019,
banned the use of plastic. The ban will be made effective
after three months from the date of publication in the
official gazette (June 17, 2019) in public interest and
for the convenience of manufacturers, stockiest, and
shopkeepers to dispose of their stocks so that they
suffer no financial loss.

MANIPURI STUDENT TO CYCLE FOR WATER
SCARCITY AWARENESS

24-year-old student from Manipur has set out on a
3,461 km journey from Kashmir to Kanyakumari
on a cycle to draw the government’s attention to water
scarcity in several parts of the country. Philem Rohan
Singh began his journey on June 15 from Srinagar. As
part of his campaign, ‘Water For Life’, he will cross 12
cities within 12 weeks. ‘The motive of the campaign is
to draw the government’s attention towards the current
scenario of water scarcity in the country and overall
water-related problems.’ Besides Srinagar, Singh will
pass through Amritsar, Chandigarh, Delhi, Agra,
Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Karnool
and Bengaluru, before finally reaching Kanyakumari.
