Rugby World UK – August 2019

(Tuis.) #1
France
From 7-10 May 2020
there will be a World
War Two Rugby
Commemoration in
Dunkirk to mark the
75th anniversary of the end of the
conflict – and organisers are looking
for veterans’ teams to take part.
Alongside the vets’ tournament there
will be an U14 sevens festival, as well as
a Remembrance Service dedicated to
rugby players who served in the war.
If you’re interested in sending a team,
or have info on players who served
or died in the conflict, please email
[email protected], marking
it for the attention of John Dennison.

Uruguay
A 28-15 win over
Argentina XV in
Montevideo enabled
Uruguay to clinch the Nations Cup
for the third successive year.
Los Teros didn’t have it all their
own way, losing 30-28 to Namibia
in their second game, but they hit
back to see off their local rivals.
“Finals are there to be won and
putting our opponents under
pressure was the key,” said
Uruguay coach Esteban Meneses.
Russia beat Argentina 48-40 and
Namibia 20-0 to finish second.

USA
Brad Tucker’s
last-minute try from a
driving maul secured
Seattle Seawolves’
26-23 win over San
Diego Legion and thus back-to-back
Major League Rugby (MLR) titles.
It was their fourth try in all, following
scores by Stephen Coetzee, JP Smith
and Riekert Hattingh. Tucker said: “We
had a bit of a goal to start building a
dynasty for Major League Rugby. I think
we took a step in the right direction.”
Seattle will look for a hat-trick of titles
next year when MLR expands to 12
teams, with New England Free Jacks,
Old Glory DC and Rugby ATL joining.
