Rugby World UK – August 2019

(Tuis.) #1
Painting for charity
Leanne Gilroy is an artist who is from
the home of the game, Rugby. She puts
her love of the sport and its players onto
canvas and by doing so raises funds
and awareness of worthy charities.
Her recent piece of Doddie Weir was
signed by the man himself. Upon sale of
the original, she donated a percentage
of proceeds and each print sold brought
more money for Doddie’s foundation.
Works on Jonny Wilkinson and Jonah
Lomu have raised funds for the Matt
Hampson Foundation, whilst the iconic
Lions image of George North helped
Latch Welsh Children’s Cancer Charity.
Many people do great work for charity
and Leanne uses her passion for art and

rugby to help in the best way she can.

Process of elimination
Re the list of 11 countries interested in
staging the 2022 Sevens World Cup:
Argentina and Scotland have held it
before. France has the 15s World
Cup already. Dubai (not
bidding) is one of the best
World Series tournaments
but I doubt Qatar could
do anywhere near as well.
Cayman Islands or Jamaica
would be great but
expensive for travel.
Germany in the autumn? A
rugby competition combined
with a trip to Oktoberfest,
now that sounds perfect.
Which means it will probably
go to India or Malaysia.

RW says: You forgot to

mention South Africa and Tunisia! The
host nation will be chosen in October.

France the place to start
Further to talk about a Lions women’s
team: I know it isn’t traditionally a
destination for Lions tours, but with
a professional league and a strong
national team there, wouldn’t a Lions
women’s team playing in France
be a good fi rst step?
Then you could go to
New Zealand, allowing
time for the domestic
game to grow in traditional
touring countries South
Africa and Australia.

Referee’s
extra eyes
With regard to the question
as to why the video referee
might help the on-pitch
referee, the answer is that
they do. I use a ‘fan radio’
and it’s clear the TMO talks
regularly to the referee, both
to point out infringements
and give warnings about
the way particular players
are behaving. It seems to
me this is very useful to the
ref and gives him ‘eyes in
the back of his head’.
