Home Tips

Floor Jack and Jack-stands

If you are going to work on your car at home, some of the best tools you can buy are a quality floor jack and jack stands.
You need at least 2 jack stands to hold your car safely. Ideally get a Trolley jack that can be easily maneuvered in to place
and would lift your car up with ease. It’s really up to you how you decide to lift your car for access to the underside. But do
not get under a car using the jack that’s in your boot. Use it to change a tire? Sure. But definitely don’t get under the car
when using that jack!

Drill

A drill will come in handy in many situations – not only when you need to drill
a hole, but even to double up as an electric screw driver or indeed even as a
polishing/buffing machine to polish your car! It is always wiser to buy a drill with
functions such as dual (fast and slow) speed and reverse rotation, as these
functions, although not immediately; will eventually come in handy.

Battery Charger

A classic or vintage car will almost certainly not be used on a daily basis.

Hence a battery charger will come in handy whenever the car needs to

be started after an extended period of non-use. That way you can plan

your classic trips better and have more “quality time” with your car!

Screw Drivers

Have an assortment of screw drivers – flat-head, Philips-
head, short handle, long handle, thin, wide... or better still,
invest in a Screw Driver set. It is one of the most frustrating
things when you just need to undo that final (often rusty)
screw, but don’t have a screw driver that fits.

Pliers

As a minimum you should have a robust
plier that can be used to grab or pull
things. Most multi use pliers will have a
grooved edge to grab things with, pipe
grip in the middle and cutter at the back
of the jaw. A Vice Grip or locking plier is
designed to lock in place, making them
excellent for gripping stripped screws and
bolts.

Tool Box

When you have all the things you need by way of tools, don’t let them be in all different
places and scattered throughout your car and garage. Get yourself a tool-box in which you
can store and carry your hand-tools. Makes life so much easier when you can access your
tools all in one place.

Get your unlicensed Classic or Vintage ride licensed - NOW
Do you have an old car lying in your garage which you still have not got around to restoring? But you do intend to get it running some
day right? Well a lot of the times we tend to keep old cars for many years; on which the license has lapsed. But when you finally get it
running and want to get it licensed... you may be in for a surprise! You might in fact be slapped with a heavy amount for license; back-
fees penalties and all!
The Western Provincial Council has now offered an amnesty for unlicensed vehicles to be licensed as follows:
Totally exempt for the period prior to 1991; when Provincial Councils were first established.
Required to pay 50% of the dues for non-payment of fees for a period exceeding 3 years other
than the current year (for which full payment needs to be made).
No penalties for the entire period.
Period of amnesty will be until 30th November 2019.
So get it done cheaper while you can!

Battery Jump Leads

I would keep the battery jump leads in
the boot of the car – just for those times
when your old battery decides to give up
the ghost.
