To honour our favourite
roadster’s 30th birthday, the
National Motor Museum at
Beaulieu is making it one of the
two big stars of its eighth
annual Simply Japanese
extravaganza. Sharing the
limelight with the MX-5 will be
another sports car icon, the

Nissan Skyline GT-R, which is
celebrating its 50th anniversary.
The event takes place on
Sunday 28 July and Beaulieu
expects around 900 cars to
assemble in the grounds of the
automotively-inclined stately
home. For further details head

You’re right, this is just a rendering: it’s Mark Savaroy’s vision of
how you might modify a mk1 to look like its glamorous ancestor,
the Mazda Cosmo from the late 1960s. Operating as
ModenaWest, Mark used the mk1 as the base for his imaginings
having also tried to apply the concept to the mk2 and mk3. ‘What
would be interesting is if some of the design elements of the
Cosmo were overlaid upon a mk4 platform,’ he muses.
Admitting that he produced the Cosmo rendering as purely
personal entertainment one otherwise dull evening, Mark would
like to see someone take on the project as a one-off build,

preferably in metal: as a classic car restorer he says, ‘I’m not a fan
of glassfibre. Most of my work is old school coachwork created
from aluminium sheet and using English wheels and traditional
metal shaping tools.’
Experience has shown Mark that a project like his Cosmo
wouldn’t be plain sailing and would require much detail redesign
of his rendering, but he’d be more than happy to hand over the
artwork if anyone wants to have a go. He’s currently working up
concept ideas for the mk3 MX-5, and at a more real world level is
looking at producing interior and exterior accessories for the car.

Run by the appropriately named Vanity Events, the fourth annual
MX-5 Show & Shine event is taking place on 15 September 2019,
once again in the picturesque grounds of the National Motor
Museum at Beaulieu.
So if you love the smell of carnauba wax in the morning, you may
fancy nipping along there for a 10.00am start. There are classes for
all four generations of the MX-5, as well as for standard cars and
modified ones. About 200 cars showed up last year and the
organisers are hoping for more this time: mx5showandshine.co.uk.
