Never mix business with
pleasure, goes an old saying,

but sometimes the two just

go hand-in-hand, as one

B

ack when we launched Total MX-5 I
ran into the BOFI Racing boys at
the MX-5 Owners Club National
Rally at Donington Park. They had a few
interesting bits and pieces scattered
around their show stand, all of it related
to making your MX-5 go that bit quicker
around a circuit or around cones on a
windswept airfield. They had a few
quirky teeshirts for sale, too, and a funky
little logo featuring a small orange cone
with eyes and a smile.
There were no corporate uniforms and
no sense of the hard sell, but what was
abundantly clear was that everyone
manning the BOFI stand was rabidly

enthusiastic about motorsport,
especially the grassroots stuff that we
could all have a crack at without much
effort at all. I can’t remember who I
nattered to on the day, but what I do
recall was their almost missionary zeal
about encouraging every MX-5 owner in
the land to think beyond using their car
just for a trip down to the pub on a sunny
Sunday, and to try some motorsport,
even at a very minor level. As if to prove
a point, they then showed me a
prototype trackday wheel/tyre carrier
that fitted to the boot lid on an MX-5 so
you could take appropriate rubberwear
to the track without recourse to a trailer
or a mate’s van.
Fast forward to the MX5OC 2019
Spring Rally, and I bump into the guys
again. This time around their stand looks
a good deal more professional, there’s
lots more bits of kit for sale, and about
