friend, Mike Lennon, who was
supplying parts to the Morris
Minor crowd, proposed that he
and David should go into
business together – they set up
The Morris Minor Centre
Birmingham which as it grew
successfully necessitated
moving to the current premises
in Oldbury in 1998, where the
company has stayed ever since.
And having established a

profitable formula for selling
classic car parts, it wasn’t long
before the company that
started with Jaguar and Daimler
parts later collaborated with
the Mini Spares Centre, and
then acquired Abingdon MG
Parts Ltd in 2000.
From an MX-5 perspective
that latter acquisition was a
pertinent buy, as Kate explains:
‘Abingdon MG Parts was

operated by the Moss
Birmingham branch, which
despite the name was a
separate entity to Moss
International. We were
attracted by the MG and
Triumph spares, but they also
had a strange little line away
from those traditional British
sports cars: the MX-5.
‘We didn’t know too much
about the Mazda, but that facet

of the business seemed a neat
fit and had clear growth
potential, so we decided to
keep it on.
‘Its performance was so
encouraging that in 2006 we
acquired all the MX-5 parts
stock of Shing Fung Trading –
despite the name it was actually
run, very successfully, by David
Butterfield and his wife from a
shed in their garden in Coventry.
