NEWS BRIEFS

VIRGIN TRAINS USA held a ceremony to
mark the start of construction on its ex-
tension from West Palm Beach, Fla., to
Orlando, but said it would delay the be-
ginning of work on its proposed service
between Southern California and Las
Vegas, Nev., after failing to secure tax
breaks from the Nevada legislature. The
company said it would try again to se-
cure those tax abatements during the
next Nevada legislative session in 2021.

The FEDERAL RAILROAD ADMINISTRATION
announced $326 million in Consolidated
Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improve-
ments grants for 45 rail projects in 29
states. Notable projects include $33 mil-
lion to the Southern Rail Commission to
restore Amtrak service to the Gulf Coast;
$29 million to the Terminal Railroad
Association of St. Louis for rehabilitation
of the MacArthur Bridge across the
Mississippi, and more than $19 million
for CREATE’s Dolton Junction Interlock-
ing improvement project near Chicago.

After two derailments — injuring a total
of 13 people — in a four-day span in
June, the MASSACHUSETTS BAY TRANS-
PORTATION AUTHORITY hired an outside
engineering firm to review the cause of
the two accidents, and convened a
three-member expert panel for a gener-
al review of its operating procedures.
Former U.S. Secretary of Transportation
Ray LaHood, former New York City Tran-
sit president Carmen Bianco, and former
acting head of the Federal Transit
Administration Carolyn Flowers will
serve on the panel.

BOMBARDIER announced it would open
a plant in Pittsburg, Calif., to assemble
new Bay Area Rapid Transit cars, mov-
ing production from its Plattsburg, N.Y.,
plant to open capacity for orders from
East Coast customers. The new plant
will eventually employ more than 100.
