AN UNLIKELY LOCATION

The June issue’s cover photo of Norfolk

Southern’s Pennsylvania Railroad heritage

unit, ES44AC No. 8102, reminded me

of another Tuscan Red, yellow-pinstriped

diesel I saw in Moradabad, India, in

January 1994. Indian Railways Class WDS

No. 36088, a broad gauge locomotive, was

built in 1986 by Diesel Locomotive Works

in Varanasi, India.

I was there to chase the Indian Railways’

still-abundant steam power, but I couldn’t

resist this Pennsy look-alike, even if it was

a diesel.
