ave you ever used one of
these before?” asks my
instructor, Stephen Gordon,
with slightly too much
gleeful anticipation for my
liking. He's pointing to what
looks like an exercise bike
with cross-trainer handles.
“I don’t think so,” I reply. “Oh you would know if you
had!” he says, with a chuckle. Two minutes later, my
limbs have fallen off and my heart rate is somewhere in
the thousands. No, I hadn’t used an AirBike before –
there have been a lot of fi rsts in the past hour.
I’m at AMP Athletic (amp.fi t), a recently opened
gym just off Marylebone High Street in Central London.
It is, in the words of founder Steve Mellor – a sports
scientist who has spent years researching the best way to
train – “the antithesis of a ‘globo-gym’.” On arrival, the
polished reception area, fl ickering scented candles and
complimentary towel hint at a boutique experience, but
any notions of a nice relaxed time are dashed when the
workout begins. Combining the motivational benefi ts of
