mass than training alone.
The researchers propose
this may be because muscle
differs from other tissues in
that the cells are enclosed
in a connective tissue
framework formed mainly of
collagen. Resistance training
upregulates collagen protein
synthesis in the muscle,
enabling muscle growth and
improvements in strength.

Muscle growth
Thanks to its high amino acid
content, various studies have
demonstrated collagen’s
effectiveness in maintaining
lean muscle. A new study
published in the journal
Nutrients demonstrated just
15g of hydrolysed collagen
daily, when added to a

Recovery
Struggling with sore muscles
after training? A recent
double-blind, randomised,
placebo-controlled clinical
study published in Amino
Acids demonstrated that
supplementing with collagen
led to 20 per cent less muscle
soreness at all time points

after intense exercise,
compared with those who
received a placebo dose. They
also experienced increases
in sports performance.
Performance was maintained
at 24 hours post-exercise
and increased at 48 hours
post-exercise. Meanwhile, the
performance of the placebo
group progressively declined.

cardiovascular deaths could be
linked to not eating enough fruit
and veg, according to a recent
study.^1 "Fruits and vegetables
are a modifi able component of

deaths globally," said lead study
author Victoria Miller.

Power Plants

Good news for veggies: a new study published
in the Journal of the International Society of
Sports Nutrition found no difference between
vegan, vegetarian and omnivorous diets when it
came to exercise performance capacity among
male and female runners. While the vegan diet
was lower in protein, overall energy intake was
similar between groups. Vegan runners tended
to consume less fat and more fi bre than the
other groups.
