CLAIM TO FAME: Freezing but beautiful
At the mouth of the Icefjord in Ilulissat, an enormous
cave has formed by water flowing beneath the glacier’s
surface. If you visit the region, there are many tour
operators that offer boat rides out to the glaciers to take
a closer look. It’s pretty chilly in Ilulissat though with an
average high of -0.6°C and a low of -7.8°C.
The Icefjord was declared a UNESCO World
Heritage Site in 2004 and the area is home
to around just 4,500 people.

CLAIM TO FAME: Part of a giant volcano

Found in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the cave

was formed when the Kilauea Volcano exploded and

lava tubes directed lava from the core of the volcano

out to the sea. As the lava stopped flowing, the

crust started to harden, leaving the tunnels. The

Nahuku-Thurston lava tube is

around 180m long and was

discovered in 1913.
