Did you know that when NASA
set out on its quest to reach the
moon it had no plans for how it
would be photographed? The
first astronauts took cameras
they bought themselves, from local drugstores.
The Hasselblad debuted when Walter Schirra
bought one from a Houston camera shop and
had NASA engineers modify it for space. These
are among the fascinating facts in this Collector’s

Issue which brings you the photographic story
of the 20th-century’s greatest achievement.
And nothing conveys the beauty and fragility
of our little blue home, or the importance of
looking after it, like William Anders’s iconic
‘Earthrise’ – we tell you the story behind what
I consider to be the most important photo ever
taken. Finally, you may never get to visit the
moon, but we show you how to shoot it from
here on earth. Nigel Atherton, Editor

THIS picture of frogs was uploaded
to our Twitter page using the
hashtag #appicoftheweek. It was
taken by photographer Helen
Davies. She tells us, ‘I attended a
“Just Frogs” photography workshop
at Liberty’s Owl, Raptor and Reptile
Centre in Ringwood, Hampshire,

the other day. It has a studio set up
for photographing the frogs, using
studio lights. We started off with
one frog then introduced another
one. When they sat together they
looked so appealing, so I took the
shot, focusing on the eye closest
to the camera.’
