AT THE 2019 AP Awards we honoured
veteran photojournalist Marilyn Stafford,
for her lifetime achievements in photography,
and you can now see the winners of her own
Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage Award. This
award is granted annually to ‘a professional
woman photographer towards the initiation
or completion of a compelling and cohesive
documentary photo essay which addresses
an important social, environmental, economic
or cultural issue, whether local or global.’
The overall winner is Özge Sebzeci from
Turkey, for ‘I Am Beautiful – But My Destiny...’
(see picture above) and the two runners-up
are Simona Ghizzoni (Italy) for ‘UNCUT’
and Mary Turner (UK) for ‘Dispossessed’.
Sebzeci’s work looks at Syrian refugee child
marriages in Turkey and how to stop them,
while Ghizzoni covers FGM in Africa and
Europe, and Turner examines the survival
of former coal-mining communities in the
North of England. These, along with all 27
shortlisted images, will be exhibited at the
After Nyne Gallery in London from 24 to
29 July. See http://www.afternynegallery.com.

Nadav Kander and Alamy

in ‘photo of a photo’ row

A DISPUTE has erupted between
celebrated portrait photographer and
artist Nadav Kander, The Big Issue magazine
and major stock library Alamy. In a recent post
on his Instagram page, Kander accuses The Big
Issue of publishing a photo (via Alamy) of one
of his most famous images – a portrait of fi lm
director David Lynch – without his permission.
‘A “photographer” goes to one of my
exhibitions and photographs my framed print
of David Lynch,’ a clearly aggrieved Kander
writes. ‘He uploads this picture to Alamy. Now
this week The Big Issue publishes an interview
with David and buys this despicably shot
picture of my photograph, crops in and uses it

on the cover.... Unbelievable blatant copyright
infringement... I would never have wanted this
photograph sold.’
A representative of The Big Issue replied as
follows: ‘This image was sourced by the art
team (who) discovered it on Alamy. We told
Alamy what we were doing and neither tried to
pull the wool over anybody’s eyes nor get away
without paying. The fi rst we discovered about
the issues with the image was when your
agency got in touch at the start of the week.
Clearly, Alamy have some explaining to do.’
AP contacted Alamy for a response but
there was no reply at the time of going to
press, so more news as we get it.

SONY has announced the FE 35mm F1.8, a
lightweight, large-aperture prime for its full-frame
mirrorless system. This new optic fi lls a gap in the fi rm’s
range between the large and expensive FE 35mm
F1.4 ZA and the compact FE 35mm F2.8 ZA.
Measuring 63mm in diameter and 73mm in length,
and with a 55mm fi lter thread, it’s the lightest lens in
its class at just 280g. With 11 elements in 9 groups,
the optical construction includes an aspherical element
to help suppress distortion, while a 9-bladed circular
aperture promises attractive bokeh. The minimum
focus distance is 22cm, affording approximately
quarter life-size magnifi cation, and the barrel sports
both a focus hold button and an AF/MF switch. Finally
outdoor photographers will be pleased to hear that it
boasts a dust and moisture-resistant design. The FE
35mm F1.8 is due to go on sale in August for £630.
