“They finished the program on that note
and it was like a slap in the face. It was
quite profound that a 90-year-old woman
would say such a profoundly truthful thing.”
When Isabelle had a health scare earlier
this year, undergoing surgery to have two
cancerous polyps removed from her bowel,
she says Gogglebox gave her a platform
to encourage others to get themselves
checked, no matter their age.
“I just wanted to urge anyone that has
a little inkling that something’s wrong
to go and get it checked out because,
honestly, if I hadn’t gone to the doctors,
things could have been really different
for me,” she explains.
The fact that the Silberys are three
independent women also sends a powerful
message, Isabelle reckons: “I hope we
represent that women can be strong in
their own right, and we can be smart
in our own right and we don’t have to
be alongside a man to be strong and
happy and valued in society.”
As for TV favourites, Kerry says she
loves documentaries, political programs
and Australian drama.
“Mum’s favourite thing is anything with
David Attenborough in it. She wants to
have sex with him!” she jokes.
It’s that sort of humour that makes the
Silbery household so special to viewers.
Kerry reveals she was once approached
by a woman who told her that after her
father’s funeral, the family went home
together to watch Gogglebox and the
laughter made them feel so much better.
“It’s amazing when people say things
like that to you,” says Kerry. “It’s lovely
that you can bring so much pleasure to
people just by sitting and watching TV.”
