(^) Experience every note of Rami Malek’s
Oscar-winning portrayal of Queen frontman Freddie
Mercury in the biopic that swept awards season.
Beginning in 1970, as Mercury joins drummer
Roger Taylor (Ben Hardy) and guitarist Brian May’s
(Gwilym Lee) band, then-called Smile, the film
chronicles Queen’s stratospheric journey up until
their performance at Live Aid in 1985.
Malek (pictured) worked tirelessly to emulate
Mercury’s spontaneous style of movement and
also took singing lessons – which shows.
“Eventually, Brian May and Roger Taylor [who
served as executive music producers] – the
legendary members of Queen – incorporated
as much of Freddie as they could and it’s mixed
in with my voice a little bit here and there, and
another singer named Marc Martel, who [has]
an incredible voice,” Malek reveals, adding:
“It’s done fairly seamlessly, I feel.”
Watching the creation of the six-minute
anthem Bohemian Rhapsody – the debut single
from 1975’s A Night at the Opera – is one of the
greatest pleasures of this movie. Taylor recording
backing vocals as Mercury repeatedly insists he
redo the take, singing in a higher and higher
pitch until he finally nails it, is just brilliant.
All the classics are there – Killer Queen,
We Are the Champions, I Want to Break Free. We
dare you not to sing along and feel a teary sense
of nostalgia reminiscing over this legendary
band’s enduring legacy.
