SLIGO HAULAGE

Keeping
costs
in check
One of Stephen’s best
practices is to continually
check the wheel alignment
of all the fleet, from the
Sprinter vans up to the
artics. At each service
they are checked and
adjusted where necessary.
The favoured tyre brand
is Bridgestone, and
Sligo recently achieved
432,000km from a set of
drive-axle tyres with one
re-groove and 230,000km
from a set of steer tyres.
“It’s more money up
front for the maintenance,
but I guarantee you we are
saving it at the other end,”
Stephen says.
530, which was brought in to
replace a 114.
“We sold on the 114 and then
realised we still kind of needed it
as a spare truck! So I went and
got this,” he grins.
A gentle life
It’s a very clean and original
example too; V8s are notorious
for having been to the moon and
back but this one has had a
relatively gentle life moving
caravans. It appeared for sale at
the right time and Gareth went
for it. It’s provided great fun – if
not fuel consumption – when it’s
been pressed into service. He
has grand plans for the truck, or
at least he did.
“I’m about to become a dad in
a few weeks’ time,” he smiles, “so
I think I’m going to do the
sensible thing and sell it on as
I’ve already had people asking
me about it. I can always get
another one.”
