unheard of to find a piece of
tinned peach in your beef stew!
Tall tales? Maybe. I won’t be
recommending you add fruit to
your stew, though if that floats
your boat go right ahead!
The tinned meal I most
commonly eat – stewing steak,
tinned new potatoes and peas
- couldn’t be easier. Basically,
bung them all in a pan (if you
need a little drop of water too,
use some of the potato water)
and heat up slowly on the hob. In
under 10 minutes you’ll have a
really delicious and filling meal.
You obviously don’t need to
use tins for the entire meal, but it
can be hard keeping fresh fruit
and veg in a lorry, not to mention
the amount of gas it can
consume cooking from scratch,
so tinned vegetables can be a
great alternative. I’ll often have a
steak with tinned new potatoes
sliced up and fried in a little
butter and/or some carrots. Mash
the potatoes or leave whole,

Tin Can Cook
I can only cover so many ideas in this column,
but Jack Monroe has written a whole book on
the subject. Although pretty well known, she’s
not your typical celebrity chef. Once having to
rely on food banks to keep her and her young
son fed, she creates some amazing recipes
from very little money – so if my talk of tins
has piqued your interest, I highly recommend
this super-useful book. Her website is great

Dessert can also come in
tinned form. Canned fruit is great
and I’ll often have some tinned
peaches with cream or, if
preferring to go healthy, Greek
yogurt; absolutely delicious.
So, next time you’re in the
supermarket, don’t dodge the tin
aisles. You’ll be amazed at the
variety of canned food available
and, with the use-by date
stretching into years, they are
ideal for our purposes – and
they’ll mean that no matter what
happens, you’ll never go hungry.
