YEARS OF VISUALIZATION

itch Horowitz’s story The Power
of Visualization, in the Febru-
ary 2019 issue of Guideposts, caught
my attention. I’ve been practicing
visualization for years.
I learned about it when I read The
Power of Positive Thinking, written by
Guideposts co-founder Dr. Norman
Vincent Peale. I got a chance to test it
out a few weeks later, when a friend
of mine, Iris, asked me to give a
demonstration at the Wausau Fair
on making gum-paste flowers for
decorating cakes. At the end of the
day, Iris said that the head of a home-
makers’ group had enjoyed my lesson.
I visualized my teaching going
further: I pictured this
person calling me up
and asking me to lead
a class on how to make
gum-paste flowers.
Months passed, but the
vision never wavered.
Finally she did call to ask me to teach
that class. I gladly accepted and
taught for two years.
I continue to use the power of
visualization to this day.

GIFT FROM MOM
M
y mom passed
away in 2016,
and my dad followed
in 2018. I often look
for ways to feel more
connected to them,
such as cooking Mom’s recipes or
driving through Dad’s hometown.
For Christmas last year, I even
bought myself a present “from Mom”:
a subscription to Guideposts. She
had been a longtime subscriber, and
although I hadn’t read the magazine
in a while, I remembered liking it.
Shortly after I placed my order, I
was cleaning out my parents’ old desk.
I found an envelope with canceled
checks from when Mom had been
about my age. One was for renewing
her Guideposts subscription!
Guideposts has proven to be exact-
ly what I needed: a friend that shows
up every month to give me a lift and
help me feel connected to my mom.
