termsofcharacter. There’s noescapingthelackofspace
either. Ofcourse, low-slungsportscarsare never goingto
bethemost capaciousofmachinesbuttheSupra’s cabin
feelsparticularlytight—andmay provea struggletoget
comfortableinfortallerdrivers. Intermsofbootcapacity,
it boastsa respectable 290 litres.
Itcomesequippedwith 19 -inchalloy wheels, dual-zone
climatecontrol,adaptive cruisecontrol,keylessentry, a
digitalinstrumentpanel,adaptive LEDheadlightsand
theBMWiDrive-basedinfotainmentsystemdisplayed on
an8.8-inchscreen.‘Pro’gradebuildsfurtheronthiswith
blackleatherupholstery, a 12-speakerJBLsoundsystem,
wirelessphonecharginganda head-updisplay.
Doubtsover thesuccessoftheToyotaSupra aren’t short
innumber. Havingthelegendary‘A 80’Mk4’s bootstofill
hasputa lotofexpectationonitsshoulders, andmany are
skepticalover theBMWconnection.
However, thenewSupra issurelysettocreateitsown
legacy. Itdeliversitsown uniquedrivingexperiencethat
isoneofthebest deliveredbyany modernsportscar, and
co-developmentwithBMWhasservedthecarwell in
alltherightareas. Thatsaid,there’s definitelya feeling
itsenginecouldtake a littlemore power onboard,plusa
manualgearbox anda betterexhaust note...tobecomfortableandrefinedwhenusedonlongerruns
too. There’s a realsenseyou couldeffortlesslycover many
milesofmotorwayinthis—somethingmany sportscars
couldn’t claim.
Theclassicsportscarformulaisrepresentedinthe
ToyotaSupra’s design.Its longbonnet,shortrear
overhangsandlow-slungcockpitharkbacktoanera of
BritishclassicsintheSixtiesandSeventies. Itdoesbring
a moderntwist tothatformulathough,withangular
taillightdesign,airventseverywhere anda frontfascia
thatlooksliftedfroma UFOspaceship. Itisundoubtedly
a headturner, thoughfromsomeanglesthespacecraft
designdetailscomeacrossasawkward.Ifit was our
money, we’dbespec’ingtheSupra inyellow,whichreally
bringsthecars’sharpdetailstolife.
We’llswingbacktotheBMWpartnershiphere,which
