Naturally, whentestinganAMGinGermany, onanunrestricted
autobahn,it issometimesnecessarytovalidatethemanufacturer’s
claimsofpower andperformance. It’s not,you understand,thatI
personallywanttoaccelerateto250kmhinthetimeit takestosay “oh
mygoodnessthat’s quick!”butrather, a dutytomyreaders.
Atthosespeedsyou’llcertainlybetakingadvantageoftheAMG’s
adaptive airsuspension,allwheeldrive,electronicallycontrolled
limitedslipdifferential,selectabledrive dynamicssettingsand
speedsensitive steering, allcombiningtodelivera rocksteady
andconfidenceinspiring, stableSUV.Writingindetailaboutall
ofthesetechnologieswouldfilla bookbuttheAMGengineersat
Mercedeshavehaddecadesofexperiencemakingcarsbothfast
andsafeandthey’re very, verygoodatit.TheGLCisnoexception,
andwhilst therideisnaturallyfirmerthanlesssportymodels, it’s


never uncomfortable, andthere’s plentyofchoicesforsofterdamper
settingswhennotina highperformancedrivingmode. Theexhaust
noteisselectableofcoursebetweennoisyandobnoxious, thelatter
beingmore fun.
Sat behindthewheel,I foundthepedalsveryslightlyoffsettomy
right,whichinthebasemodelGLCsI hadn’t noticed,butthesports
seatsintheAMGnaturallyholdyou more firmlysoyou’re lessable
toalignyourselftosuitthepedals. Theflatbottomedsteeringwheel
itselfprobablycontainsmore computingpower thanlaunched
theSaturnVrockets, withtouchcontrols, integratedLCDscreen,
configurabledisplay buttonsandthankfully, theabilitytoalso
turnthefrontwheels. However eventhatfunctioncanbelargely
automated,sincewithDrivingAssistancemodeengaged,theGLC’s
smarttechnologiesreplacemuchofthedriver’s input.
