of 1978 , was simple:make a
performance-orientedandengagingtodrive
four-doorluxurysaloon—andtheyknocked
it outoftheparkwiththeE23.
The733i—witha 3.2-litre 12-valve M30
straight-six—made 197 horsepower which
was edgeofyourseatstufffortheday. It
was matedtoa four-speedmanualwhilea
three-speedautomaticcouldbehadtooand
customersalsohadthechoiceoftwo smaller
engines, the2.8-litre and3.0-litre with 170
and 184 respectively. Earlyfuel-injected
modelsusedtheBoschL-jetronicsystem
whilelatermodelsusedthemore advanced
digitalBoschMotronicsystemwhilethe 728
and 730 wereavailablewitha Solex four-
barrelcarburettoruntil‘79.
Itwas a sleek,sportyofferingwhichwas
lappedupbyenthusiastsasnotonlywas
it thrillingtodrive butit hadrazor-sharp
refl exestoo; thedouble-linkfrontsuspension
keptit niceandtightinthecorners, the
steeringofferedgoodfeedbackandthe
discbrakesinallfourcornershadstrong
stoppingpower. Theingeniouslytailoredyet
understatedbodysharedmuchofthedesign
ofthePaulBracq-penned3,5,and6 Series
models. Thatincludedtheshark-nosefront
endwithBMW’s trademarktwinkidney
grille, theHofmeisterkinkintheC-pillar,
andtheboot’s rolled-offtrailingedge. Anice
touchwas theAlpinaStylealloy wheels.
Inside, it packedthehighest quality
materialsbutlittleeffortwas madeinterms
ofvisualpizzazz;theonlysplashofopulence
was thematte-finishwoodtrimonthedoors.
Ithadpower seats, seatheaters, climate
control,power windowsandmirrorsand
it won’t breakthe bankto putyourselfin the lap of old
schoolluxury, in fact, the BMw 733ie23canbe hadfor
as littleas dh40,000 today...
