Q&As

see how we can make the complexity
of developer tools go away and get
developers to use parts of them they
didn’t even know about as they were

As to the fact that we moved to
the Chromium project instead of
maintaining our own engine, this was
a pragmatic decision. We realised that
developers favoured Chromium over
rwkhu#rļhulqjv#dqg#zh#vdz#lw#dv#dq#
opportunity to improve this open-source
project by adding our resources to it.
That way we improve the experience
of all projects based on Chromium,
which are browsers, but also the node
infrastructure or Electron-based apps.

FORGING A CAREER
How can you reach out to companies that
interest you, even if they have no job
openings on their web page?
María José Gaete Cerda, via email
SM: If you’re a design student,
companies like Blizzard Entertainment
hold Student Art Contests throughout
the year (https://careers.blizzard.com/
en-us/students/contests) and portfolio
reviews at events like BlizzCon. These
are great opportunities for students to
gain experience and is the primary way

that companies like Blizzard recruit
future employees.
For the rest of us, whether you’re a
designer or a developer, it’s important to
have the following three things:
1) Actually have your work posted
online. Whether you’re a designer with
a personal portfolio or a developer with
experiments posted on CodePen, street
credibility is real and it starts here.
2) Have a skill or design style that the
company already has employees for.
3) Most importantly, be really good.
If you check all three of these boxes
and there’s no job posting, I recommend
reaching out for advice from people who
already work at the company you’re
interested in on places like Twitter. If
you’re polite and sincere, they should let
you know what you’re missing. If your
work is good enough, you might just
vwduw#d#iulhqgvkls#wkdw#ohdgv#wr#Ľqglqj#
out about upcoming job openings.
Finally, remember that you just might
not be ready for some jobs, or the timing
may not be right. Early in my career,
I applied to places like Oakley and
Blizzard multiple times and never got a
response back. But years later I scored
surmhfwv#dqg#mre#rļhuv#zlwk#erwk#ri#wkrvh#
companies. So don’t give up hope.

Can you tell me what
accessibility tools are in
Edge DevTools?
Simon Minter, Oxford, UK

Chromium features
CH: Now Edge is built on
Chromium, its DevTools
offer familiar Chromium
features for assessing
accessibility, such as the Accessibility
pane and the Audits tab.

Webhint extension
The Edge DevTools
team has also been
a major contributor
to webhint, an
open-source project that offers devs
customisable hints for improving
accessibility (and other key areas in web
development). Webhint is available as a
VS Code extension, a browser extension
and a CLI tool, so you can get key
accessibility insights during development,
debugging and deployment.

Screen readers
The Edge DevTools team
has also contributed
more than 100 changes
back into Chromium to
improve the accessibility of the DevTools
themselves. Now, developers using
the DevTools without a mouse or with
assistive technologies such as screen
readers, can more efficiently navigate
through DevTools. The PM on that
project is Rachel Simone Weil, aka @
partytimeHXLNT on Twitter.

The latest version of Edge is based on Chromium, but that doesn’t mean the developer tools are the same as Chrome
