At Mad River HQ, we find aspects of

live sites that inspire us: typographic

treatments, interactions, or the way a

responsive issue has been tackled.

Portfolio sites like Dribbble and Behance

are good too. I dissect other media types

and artforms to understand why they

work. Instagram, photography journals,

art galleries – all are fair game. On a

personal level, I head out: walking in the

woods, brewing coffee on the beach or fly-

fishing. Being outside soothes the soul

and brings fresh perspective.

Usually, it’s going for a walk and listening to a
good podcast that gets me inspired. Sometimes
that walk takes me past the store and I’ll pick up some
chocolate for a bit of a ‘fika’ treat for when I get back.
[Fika is a Swedish tradition that means making time for
friends and colleagues to share a cup of coffee (or tea)
and a little something to eat.] Other times, it’s taking a
break and doing something completely unrelated to
work, or playing with our daughters. Their smiles and
our oldest daughter’s imagination always reminds me
of the beauty and simplicity in things.

If I’m at work and I run out of inspiration, then I turn to Pinterest. Any other
time I turn to social media because I use it on a daily basis anyway. So I
thought to myself, why not browse Instagram for inspiration purposes, as well as
for dog videos? I started following design accounts and I save anything that I find
particularly interesting in different collections: I have one for each letter of the
alphabet. Another thing that always works is to simply just step away from what
I’m working on and either work on something else, take a coffee break or ask my
colleagues for feedback.

I have a few things that will kick
off my day right even if I’m not
feeling my best. Listening and dancing
to upbeat, happy tunes (these days
mostly Lizzo) while getting ready, a
longer walk to work through the park,
latte from my favourite coffee
roasters, followed by breakfast in the
office while planning my day. In that
particular order. If I need a pick up or
inspiration during a difficult day, it will
have to be by getting away from my
screen or my desk. Mainly finding
something to eat that can make me
happy and full or a walk by the bay.
