T

he SailGP series, in its young life, has
attracted probably about the amount
of coverage that founder Larry Ellison
hoped for – tons. Like any idea that
shakes things up a bit, that coverage
has not always been partisan, but while the
traditionalists stand around being sni y, Larry’s
one-design F50s are out there putting on a hell
of a show. In August the show comes to Cowes,
having wowed thousands of onlookers in Sydney,
San Francisco and most recently New York, where
the GBR team were lucky to be back racing shortly
a er a high-speed capsize. e Solent should
be slightly easier than the narrow con nes and
unpredictable gusts of the Hudson River, but the
Solent ain’t that easy. Watching these precarious
machines screaming along at near 50 knots just
yards o the green is going to be something to
remember. As o cial media partner of SailGP
Cowes, we preview the event in full on page 28.
e debate of the moment is the America’s Cup
and even Mr Bertelli has joined in on this one,
letting o steam in the Italian press. Are the boats
too radical, will anyone be able to sail them, let
alone race them, will they break, should we have

had a more traditional format, should we have stuck
with the boats from the last Cup, is it all getting too
expensive? Each one of these points has been hotly
debated before every America’s Cup going back to
Herresho and beyond. e Cup attracts madness
and magic in equal measure – long may that be the
case. Bob Fisher gets the Cup latest on page 15.
Writing this, I’m back in the o ce a er a Round
the Island Race that was both eventful and non-
eventful. We made it to Ventnor before zero wind and
not much dinner on board persuaded us to pack it in.
I was sailing with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust
and despite the retirement had one of the greatest
days on the water that
I’ve ever had. My full
report is next month.
Meanwhile we cover
the results on page 6.
