CLUBS & CLASSES

Bowmoor SC’s Ian Marshall gained a picket fence of scores in
his slippery Magnum 6 to become the National Lowrider
Moth Champion on handicap over a light wind ve-race
series at Carsington. ere is probably a no more challenging
discipline in light airs than sailing a Lowrider Moth but
despite the lack of velocity all weekend, the mass gathering
provided further evidence of the momentum of the Lowrider
class revival. Seven participants from the 1991 Moth
Nationals at Saundersfoot were present at the largest
gathering of ‘lowrider’ Moths in 15 years. e eet included a
diverse range of designs and second overall was Paul
Hignett’s Hungry Tiger (Loch Lomond) with Tom Foxall and
his Magnum 3 in third. Foxall’s previous best was 13th in
1991, and archives show in 12th that year was Hignett, with
Nigel Williams (sixth this time) getting the better of both in
11th. Old rivalries have clearly been resumed!

Boyd & Troll dominate as Hobie 16s revisit Poole

e Hobie 16 nationals returned to Poole YC, aer
the club hosted the rst Hobie 16 nationals in 1978.
ere were perfect twin-trapezing conditions over
most of the three days for 17 teams. Andrew Boyd
and Kim Troll dominated from day one with a
hat-trick of bullets, with Lloyd Crisp/Claire Marion
second overnight followed by seasoned Hobie 16
racer Mark Farrow competing for the rst time

with his 14-year-old son Johnny. Another good
breeze of 18-20 knots with strong gusts saw Boyd/
Troll continue their success with a 1,1,4,2, with the
Farrows now second overnight and local Poole
sailor Jacobo Miquel with crew omas Clayton
creeping into third. e nal day had even gustier
conditions for more thrills and spills and the nal
two races did not alter the placings.

Despite an atrocious forecast, 22 boats
turned up to do battle for the Harken-
sponsored OK Inlands title at
Northampton SC.
Conditions were attritional with gusts
reaching 28 knots at times from various
directions and 20-degree wind shis.
Overnight Ed Bradburn and Richard
Burton were tied for the lead with Fergus
Barnham trailing in third aer a bad
swim in race four.
Lighter and warmer conditions
followed on the Sunday for three more
races, with Bradburn sailing impeccably
and managing the shiing conditions
better than the rest to take the
championship, part of the HD Sails
Inland Series, with some authority.
Fergus Barnham took second overall
with Tony Woods third, while Burton
faltered in the lighter conditions, slipping
to fourth.

MIKE MILLARD

Over three days of contrasting weather
Hamble River SC continued its centenary
celebrations with its rst June Regatta for
many years.
e weather got in the way of the 50+
Regatta, for anyone aged over 50, for all
bar ve hardy Foxer sailors, who
completed four races with Paul Lovejoy
snatching overall victory.
e Junior Regatta day had even worse
weather but even though a few
mastheads got planted rmly in the
Hamble mud it was smiles all round with
some valuable experience gained.
Sunshine and a building southwesterly
breeze then delivered perfect conditions
for the IRC, Club Handicap and XOD
regatta day, with Mike and Susie Yates
J/109 Jago counting a 1,2,3 scoreline for
the overall win, with the XODs won with
a 1,1,2 by Gary Rossall.

Southworth claims
Quarter Ton Cup

MATT RUTTER

Ian Southworth's Protis won the 15th
edition of the revived Quarter Ton Cup
aer dominating the regatta from start to
nish. A full quota of nine races over
three days saw Southworth's team, which
included Led Pritchard, Lincoln
Redding, John Santy and Mike Stannard,
only nish outside the top three once.
e team also picked up the Coutts
Trophy for the boat winning the most
races.
e battle for second was erce, with
Sam Laidlaw's BLT starting the nal day
with a slim 2.5-point advantage over
Louise Morton's Bullet. Each collected
an OCS, then two h place nishes for
Morton, to Laidlaw's 13th and 10th was
more than enough for the two-times
winner of the Quarter Ton Cup to take
second place. Morton's crew, including
Nicky and Lucy Macgregor, Suzy Russell,
Bethan Carden and Dave Lenz, ended up
with a comfortable 10.5-point advantage
over Laidlaw.
e Corinthian trophy for all-amateur
crews went to Robert Stewart's Hellaby
in 12th overall with a team including
Jamie Blair, Nick Young, Barry Shotton
and Simon Smith.
