Yachts & Yachting – August 2019

(Nandana) #1
Andy Couch took an
emphatic win at the Phantom
P+B Inlands at Northampton
SC, showing the eet how to
race the boat at its best.
e 22 competitors were
greeted by a light southerly
breeze on day one, which saw
defending inland champion
Couch setting out his stall
with three bullets. A fresh
breeze on day two then

provided less shiy
conditions, with boat speed
in play this time for more
extremely close racing.
Couch posted another two
bullets for overall victory,
with local Will Gulliver
claiming the only other race
win to nish second overall
just a point ahead of Nick
Orman (Castle Cove) in
third.

ANNE BONWIT, CHICHESTER CRUISER RACING CLUB

SARAH DESJONQUERES

Nineteen yachts from ve clubs competed on a blustery Eastern
Solent for the annual VPRS Nationals, hosted by Chichester
Cruiser Racing Club with hospitality at Island SC and Cowes
Corinthian YC.
Class One for larger yachts was dominated by Ivor Graham
and Brian ompson in their Dehler 36 Deity (Poole) with
three rst places in 20 to 25 knots showing their heavy weather
skills and enabling Deity to regain the title she previously won
in 2017.
Second was Bob Garrett’s DuFour 365 Intrepid (CCRC),
while the largest boat and leader on the water in two of the
three races was Poole Yacht Racing Association captain Rob
Gibson racing the Humphreys 50 Hope & Glory.
In Class Two a battle between Keith Lovett’s Ecume de Mer
MS Amlin QT (Royal Motor) and Terry Stewart’s Quartet
‘Genesis’ (Poole) saw the former emerge the victor, with Susan
Rutter’s British Folkboat (CCRC) third.

Contender Southerns

at Highcli
e SC

At the Contender Southerns at Highclie
SC, the sub-10 knots part of the forecast
was what the eet had on the opening
day and Graham Scott took the rst two
bullets with Richard Frawks claiming the
third.
A very dierent day then saw a
south-westerly well in the teens and due
to rise and a few characters completely
lived up to the ‘game of two halves’
anecdote. ese included Richard Batten
(Mudeford) who posted some hey
numbers on the Saturday and followed
up with a respectable 2,6,3 on day two.
A consistent series from Scott, who
had mastered hugely dierent conditions
and tide, gave him an impressive victory,
with local Simon Mussell second and
Carl Tago (Oxford) third.

With four rsts, the Edinburgh-based
team on Corby 33 Jacob VII clinched
victory in the RC35 eet at Mudhook
Regatta. Chased hard by the eet, John
Stamp’s only missed rst place went to
Kevin and Debbie Aitken’s First 36.7
Animal, en route to second overall. e
Macnish/Galbraith/Chassels-owned
Sonata (Royal Gourock) picked up ve
rsts and the Sonata Scottish
Championship. Rod Stuart’s Ataraxia,
helmed by Josh Kerr, won the Etchells
and the CYCA eet was topped by Dan
Chassels’ Hunter 707 (Royal Western).
