ANY of the world’s best
athletes descended on
the British capital for
the annual Anniversary
Games. The latest stop in the
IAAF’s Diamond League series
saw a two-day programme of
events at the London Stadium
with British athletes taking
advantage of the world-class
competition and fine weather
conditions to register a series of
PBs and national records.
Biggest cheers went to Laura
Muir, Lynsey Sharp, Jonnie
Peacock and the British 4x100m
team as they scored victories
on home soil.
But there was a European
400m hurdles record from
Karsten Warholm of Norway,
Jamaicans Shelly-Ann Fraser-
Pryce and Danielle Williams
were in red-hot form in the
100m and 100m hurdles,
Daniel Ståhl of Sweden was in
imperious form in the discus,
while Kenya’s Hellen Obiri was
the pick of an impressive bunch
of middle-distance running
performances by East African
athletes.
The arena was only a little
more than half full, yet the
crowd was still impressively
noisy during certain moments.
Some also feel the event is too
thinly spread over two days and
would profit from being held
on a single day or evening, but
these are small criticisms on a
meeting that was otherwise well
organised and full of top-class
track and field.
