BORÅS, SWEDEN, JULY 18-21 @ATHLETICSWEEKLY

final was won by Italy’s Larissa
Iapichino, the daughter of Olympic
and world medallist Fiona May (see
Digest, p8), as she jumped 6.58m
to take a title which her mother
had claimed in 1987. Silver went
to Sweden’s hurdles champion
Johansson (6.52m) as Mills was just
a single centimetre off her PB with a
best of 6.50m for bronze. Her British
team-mate Josie Oliarny placed
seventh with 6.14m.
Another athlete following in her
parent’s footsteps was Russia’s
Aksana Gataullina as, competing
as an authorised neutral athlete,
she claimed the pole vault title
with a clearance of 4.36m, 36 years
after her father Rodion Gataullin
won gold himself.
Alida van Daalen of the

Netherlands won the women’s
discus with 55.92m, 30 years
after her mother Jacqueline
Goormachtigh won bronze
at the 1989 European Junior
Championships.
Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh
took high jump gold with 1.92m.
After adding to golds in the
world and European under-18
championships over the past two
years, she had three tries at a world
junior record height of 2.02m and
was close on one attempt. Neutral
athlete Adelina Khalikova took silver
with 1.90m, the best by a European
under-18 athlete this year. Another
neutral athlete, Natalya Spiridonova,
filled the bronze medal position
with 1.87m.
On the triple jump runway,

Spiridoula Karidi went out to a Greek
