GEBRHIWET DOUBLE
WHAT a few days for Hagos Gebrhiwet.
The 25-year-old Ethiopian has picked up
minor medals in the 2013 and 2015 World
Championships and 2016 Olympics but has
previously struggled to win the big races but this
appears to be changing.
He won a loaded Ethiopian 10,000m trials in a
world-leading 26:48.95 and then a few days later
outkicked Jakob Ingebrigtsen with a 53-second
last 400m to win the Diamond League 5000m at
London in 13:01.86.
The time, though fast, was only his 10th
quickest but he had not won in any of his nine
fastest races despite a 12:55 top 10 average and
12:45.82 PB.

Performance of the week: Hagos Gebrhiwet

TALKING POINTS

OF THE WEEK

EUROPEAN JUNIOR

THE highlight of a superb

European Under-20

Championships for Britain

was the clean sweep in the

men’s 800m.

When you think that came

without UK record-holder

Max Burgin and on the same

weekend another talented

junior, Aex Botterill, was

winning in Belgium in 1:47.81.

Curiously, although

Britain won five of the six

800m medals in Sweden,

they picked up just a single

bronze in the combined

1500m, 3000m, 5000m and

steeplechase in both men’s

and women’s events.

Will the two-lap success

at junior level eventually filter

down to the longer events?

RESULTS

FOR those new to the results

pages some of the data may

be overwhelming and hard to

fathom.

To save space, for example,

AW does not put the home

athlete’s country code in. For

example, in Swedish meets it

does not say (SWE).
