FELL

JULY 20
CASTELL HOWELL INTERNATIONAL
SNOWDON RACE, Llanberis
WMRA WORLD CUP leaders Andy Douglas and
Sarah McCormack extended their lead in this
fourth round over the out-and-back route of
Wales’ top mountain race.
Douglas amassed a lead of around 15
seconds over the 600-runner field early in the
race and reached the summit in 40:48, over
a minute ahead of Italy’s Martin Demattei’s.
The fast descending Scotincreased his lead
to post 64:04, two-and-a-half minutes ahead
of Demattei. This was one of the fastest times
seen at the race and close to Kenny Stuart’s
62:29 course record from 1985.
The Italian man’s twin brother Bernard,
runner-up in the world mountain running
championships in 2015, was a close third
while Zak Hanna led his Ireland team home
in fourth. Scotland won the team event with
Douglas supported by James Espie and
Ewan Brown.
Douglas, whose recent good form has
seen him claim a team gold medal at
the European championships in Zermatt,
Switzerland two weeks ago, said: “It means
so much - it’s a race I’ve wanted to do for a
while but it’s never quite been in my plans.
“The world championships in November
will be the big aim for the rest of the year.”
Ireland’s McCormack had previously won
twice at Snowdon and the World Cup leader
was unstoppable after passing early race
leader Hatti Archer and battling with Italy’s
Elisa Sortini all the way back to the finish to
win by 22 seconds.
England were comfortable victors as
Kelli Roberts and Megan Wilson followed
Archer home.
“I’m absolutely delighted,” said
McCormack. “It was a great race and Elisa
was catching me on the way down. We were

neck and neck with about a mile to go which
doesn’t happen too often in the women’s
field. I ran six minutes faster than I’ve ever
done here.”
Complete international team lists were
not available on going to press.
