The Great Outdoors – August 2019

(Barry) #1
THE LONE FIGURE, sweeping mist, striking colours and looming summit – it’s
fair to say that Orla Stevens has captured the magic of the Cobbler in Central
Scotland. “The Cobbler has drawn me back again and again, on a quest to climb it
when not entirely shrouded in mist,” says Orla. “Its rock features still remain a bit
of a mystery to me; each trip has shown me varying segments of its form. That’s
why I came to paint it.”
When asked how she managed to depict such a well-known Corbett in such
a unique way, Orla explained her hands-on technique. “I love exploring the
environment on a detailed macro level – crouching down, seeing all the colours
within the ground cover and rock formations. Changing your perspective reveals
so many hidden surprises. I wanted to pull out these macro viewed colours to the
attention of the viewer.
“The challenge in this piece was to apply the ink – which shades the rocks and
forms the silhouette. As the ink is so dark, one wrong movement and the whole
thing would have to be changed!”

Open Studios (7—15 September) in Callander.
