CONTRIBUTORS & CONTACTS

Cameron McNeish
Former TGO editor Cameron
has finally realised that you don’t
actually have to visit a cairn to enjoy
a good hill day. In recent years he
has developed a fascination for the
history of hillwalking and recently
re-read Children of the Dead End by
Patrick MacGill, the subject of his
feature on pages 36-41. He’s just
returned from a tour of south-west
Scotland, exploring roads less
travelled and peering over horizons
that have been unfamiliar simply
because that horizon didn’t top 3000
feet. He is eager to explore this whole
new world that has opened up to him.

Sarah Stirling
Inspired by Nan Shepherd that
“To aim for the highest point is not
the only way to climb a mountain”,
adventure writer Sarah is currently
trying to hike to and swim in 100
different Snowdonian swim spots.
She offers her three favourite
mountain lake walks in this issue
over on pages 42-47. Sarah has just
finished walking Snowdonia’s new
83-mile Slate Trail, which turned up
beautiful quarry lakes and
river gorge swimming holes.
You can follow her challenge or
find inspiration on Instagram
@sarah_stirling.

Tom Prentice
Tom’s latest book The Cuillin &
Other Skye Mountains is the result
of nearly a decade exploring and
photographing the mountains of Skye

  • you can see some of his expertise
in action on pages 54-57. Previously
an Assistant Editor at TGO and Editor
of Climber, Tom has spent the last
    20 years managing the compilation,
    design and production of Scottish
    Mountaineering Club guidebooks for
    climbers, hillwalkers and scramblers.
He continues to climb in Scotland,
but also has his eyes on a few more
    Alpine peaks and a coast-to-coast
    Pyrenean Haute Route.

Paul Beasley
TGO contributor Paul has not been
out on the hills recently due to a
postponed hernia operation.
However, now patched up, he’s
looking forward to a summer trip to
Dartmoor for a south-to-north route
over some of its remotest tors.
You can read about Paul’s previous
adventure in the Lake District on
pages 58-65 where he attempts to
follow a Lakeland watercourse from
source to sea. Paul has also been
planning Scandinavian walks aplenty

  • entirely influenced by a print of
    Olaus Magnus’s Carta Marina (1539),
which hangs in his living room.
