Betty Buckley is a performer whose talent transcends television, œ lm, and stage. Audiences of a certain age
know her from Eight is Enough, and millennials may recognize her from the HBO series Oz. She’s one of the
most respected names in theater; New York magazine called her “The Voice of Broadway.”
Now 72, the Tony Award winner stars in the revival of Hello, Dolly! which comes to Belk Theater this month.
She steps into the title role of Dolly Gallagher Levi, a middle-aged marriage broker in 1880s New York City
who runs side hustles like music lessons and surgical corset-reboning. It’s the role Carol Channing originated,
and it won Bette Midler a Tony in 2017. (Barbra Streisand played Dolly in the movie version.) The role requires
star power, and Buckley is one of the few leading ladies with the prowess to do it.
It’s an old-time musical with horse-drawn trolleys and carpetbags, but certain lines still hold up today. At
the end of the show, Dolly remarks, “Money, pardon the expression, is like manure. It’s not worth a thing
unless it’s spread around, encouraging young things to grow.”

ADELE GIVENS
July 5-7
Adele Givens has starred on TV shows like The
Hughleys, Moesha, and Russell Simmons’ Def Comedy
Jam, as well as movies like Beauty Shop and The
Players Club. Her fans call her the Queen of Comedy,
and her catch line—“I’m such a f*cking lady”—has
gone viral. The funny lady is also a writer, producer,
and director, and her hilarious observations about
celebrity culture, relationships, and life as a female
in comedy will have audiences howling when she
comes to Charlotte Comedy Zone this month.
