USIC IS NOT SOMETHING THAT’S
often talked about in our tests but
when you live with a car, commute
to work with it, hit the same highways on
weekend runs, the quality of the sound
system assumes outsized proportions. And
the Tucson does have an excellent sound
system. It starts with the ease of use — all
that iDrive, MMI and what not the boys keep
talking about, the Hyundai has nothing
fancy and yet it works logically, sensibly and
perfectly. You’re never hunting for the correct
menus and even with CarPlay connected, it’s
easy to slide back into the system menus to
amp up the bass when Apple Music throws
up an unexpected surprise. That’s another
strong point, the bass, with the Arkamys

setup delivering strong punch and depth. If
you haven’t heard of Arkamys, well, join the
club, but that said this is better than some of
the big-names stuck to the speaker grilles of
luxury cars and SUVs.
Of course the Tucson compliments the
sound system, the sound insulation being

who think they’re invincible and ride without
helmets, so there’s no filter when they open
their traps at the lights. Speaking of Pune I
do feel guilty commuting in such a big SUV,
especially with the roads getting even more
congested with the metro work, but the

comfort the Tucson delivers, the sheer joy
of driving it everyday... well I just turn up the
volume and drown out my guilt. And in any
case the Tucson isn’t too big, everywhere
the Creta goes, every parking spot the Creta
fits in, so does the Tucson. And like I’ve been
telling everyone who asks, the ten extra lakh
of rupees that you shell out for the Tucson
over the Creta really is money well spent. You
get a bigger engine and more power (and
of course lower fuel efficiency, a bit under
10kmpl overall), a nice automatic gearbox,
better handling, more comfort, more space,
more features and — not that I’ve ever been
in a pickle and needed its services — all-wheel
drive. Sure, in the wet, on concrete roads,
the 4WD system allows the Tucson to put
