ONEPLUS 7 PRO

ONEPLUS ANNOUNCED THE ONE IN APRIL 2014 and
with it changed the smartphone industry for good.
Since then, the brand continued pricing its offerings
conservatively, while still retaining the ‘flagship killer’
moniker. Lately, their newer iterations have been
close to the flagships when it comes to outright
performance, bringing us to the new and shiny
OnePlus 7 Pro, which we think is OnePlus’ first true
flagship phone.
For starters, OnePlus have put everything they have
developed over the years into it, and it shows the
moment you hold it. The OnePlus 7 Pro is encased
in glass and receives the curved glass display
treatment that Samsung has made popular. The
phone feels great to the touch and is solidly built too.
The fears about the pop-out camera that we will
get to later in the review, have been allayed too. The
camera enclosure is now larger to accommodate
the ultra wide, wide and telephoto lens. Overall, the
phone is much larger, and the absence of the notch
from the top of the display and reduction in the size
of the bezels on all sides ensures that the display is
simply huge. And that is the single biggest upgrade
on the OnePlus 7 Pro. Apart from the larger 6.67-inch
display, the resolution is higher and so is the refresh
rate, a ground-breaking 90Hz. Scrolling through apps
is far smoother and gaming is a lot more immersive
as well, something the stereo speakers on the 7 Pro
add to as well. The lack of punchholes or notches
lends a seamlessness to the phone. Colour accuracy,
brightness and uniformity are on point too. However,

its 19.5:9 aspect ratio, though suitable for gaming
and watching videos is cumbersome to use with one
hand. Moving on to the biggest talking point of the 7
Pro, the cameras, it is evident that OnePlus has put in
a lot of effort into the triple camera setup. The main
48MP wide-angle lens is a definite improvement over
that of the 6T. And the added versatility that the
ultra wide and telephoto lens provides is a boon to
amateur photographers. However, the cameras still
need improvements when it comes to image quality
and when put side-by-side with a Pixel 3 or Iphone
XS. That said, features like the availability of PDAF,
CAF and AF along with the much-improved Portrait
mode, make it a very handy smartphone camera.
The party trick of the 7 Pro, the mechanical pop-up
front facing camera is actually commendable in the
way it delivers good quality photographs. The sliding
mechanism is robust. DXO mark rates the OnePlus
cameras highly and we were surprised it didn’t
perform as well as the ratings suggest. OnePlus has
promised a firmware update will change that. In the
specs department, the OnePlus 7 Pro scores over any
other Android device in the market. With an industry
first UFS 3.0 read/write speeds, it is a total beast. We
didn’t come across a single instance of a delayed app
launch or stutter during heavy gaming usage. One
chink in its armour is that the Fluid-AMOLED screen
hits the battery life hard. But with WARP charge
juicing it up fairly quickly, it shouldn’t be a concern for
most users.
All in all, the OnePlus 7 Pro is a phenomenal
phone. The flagship killer is now the flagship to beat.
With spectacular specs, the best screen on any
smartphone, a quality camera setup and premium
build, the 7 Pro should definitely be on the top of your
list if you’re looking for a new phone.
