EVO WORLDWIDE EDITORS-IN-CHIEF

TEN YEARS AGO A PRICELESS BMW 7 SERIES
prototype chauffeured me to the Oktoberfest, combusting
hydrogen in the IC engine, forecasting a solution for when
the earth ran out of oil. And that was the last we heard of
hydrogen propulsion, it was frightfully expensive. The
tech has now evolved and the engine in the nose is a Fuel
Cell coupled with electric motors employing hydrogen
as the on-board fuel to generate electricity, removing the
need for batteries. This month I drove the Hyundai Nexo,
one of the first commercially sold (not leased) FCEVs and
it drives exactly like an electric car — silent, instant torque
and no range anxiety with fuel tanks under the seat. So is
this the future?
Hyundai certainly believe so, claiming FCEVs have
twice the well-to-wheel efficiency of the greenest IC-
engined cars, even if hydrogen is extracted from natural
gas. But aren’t they frightfully expensive? According
to research, for a range of 355km, the costs of EVs and
FCEVs is the same (at 7200 US dollars) though right now,
in South Korea, the Nexo costs 35,000 US dollars. That is
after a 50 per cent central plus state government subsidy
and that’s still 10,000 US dollars more than a Sonata for
a Creta-sized SUV. Durability? The Nexo is guaranteed
for 160,000km over ten years. Operating costs? At 9 US
dollars for a kilo for hydrogen, the running cost is on
par with petrol, and the target is to bring down costs by
one- fourth. Range? 609km from the three tanks with
filling taking five minutes. Filling stations? Seoul has four
hydrogen pumps with more on the way. Also hydrogen can
be piped through the gas pipes every city already has, so
that’s a solution being looked into.
Green creds? The Nexo is one big air purifier: it can
filter micro-particulate matter as small as PM2.5 and the
claim is running 100,000 Nexos for two hours can clean
up downtown Seoul. And of course with no batteries it
is far cleaner to make and recycle, with 50 times more
components as a Battery Electric Vehicle and FCEVs will
not make everybody already working in the automotive
sector redundant, and we won’t have to depend on another
country for the rare earths that go into batteries.
So why are statements like ‘only EVs by 2030’ being
flung around when other technologies are maturing
rapidly? And if the intent really is to clean up the air, why
aren’t we getting more aggressive on CNG? L
