seemed little point in changing it. I
treated all the bendix components to
a thorough clean, ready for refi tting.
The 35J noise was resolved by taking
the shaft out of the starter, cleaning
the shaft and bushes and reassembling
with a spot of oil to lube the bushes. A
clean, light degrease by wiping with
a rag dipped in solvent, and a similar
light rub down to remove surface rust
and everything went back together.
The MG 35G starter had virtually
no rust externally and the rust on the
shaft cleaned o perfectly by gently
using the wire wheel on the bench
grinder. The 35G bendix components
were cleaned but I decided to renew the
gear, as the weak spring would likely
have caused problems. A new gear was
ordered from Mini Spares and, in the
meantime, I masked up and sprayed
both starters with a light coat of primer.
Both will be fi nished in engine colour.
A few years back I bought a 15,000-
mile 998 power unit on eBay, mainly
because I wanted the crank. I thought
This one was a bit
more rusty when the
bendix was removed.

cleaning and spraying
in a light coat of holding
primer. Both will be top-
coated in engine enamel.
The starter shaft cleaned
up well using the bench
grinder wire wheel.
