The crank from the engine has virtually no wear. Sadly,
though, the primary gear bush had destroyed itself,
rendering the crank scrap at the same time.
The block is good and
will be used as part of
another engine build –
with a difference.
Dilemma: do I
change my standard
Tex door mirrors
for these rather
nice racing-style
examples?
Also made by Tex,
they fit to the same
mounting points and
sit closer in, which is
good in a tight garage
situation like mine.
the crank from my original 998 was
worn but, after stripping the engine
down, it turned out to be perfectly good.
I separated the 15k engine and box a
while back, as I needed the gearbox,
but have only just got round to fully
stripping the engine itself. The crank
journals are virtually unworn, as you
would expect from a 15k engine, but
the primary gear bush and shim were
terribly worn. Sadly it has damaged
the crank, rendering it scrap. I took
the crank over to Rob Walker who
confi rmed it as useless after testing
with a brand new primary gear. Rob
said he had never seen this before and
put it down to a lack of lubrication. It
just shows you should never assume
anything when buying used parts!
On to the yellow Mini and I am
trying to decide whether to fi t
racing-style Tex mirrors in place of
the standard ones. I’ll let you know
what I decide when I decide!
