Rear mudflaps are secured to
the bottom edge of the rear
valance and tethered with a
chain to the rear bumper.

Philip flew from the Netherlands to Portugal
to track down a Mk1 Cooper S and persuade its
then owner to remove it from his collection.

Dry storage in Portugal had preserved the
metalwork but the wiring, seals and rubbers
all deteriorated, so they were all renewed.

After the first extensive test drive of the Cooper
S, the 1275cc A-series engine suffered a failure
which necessitated a full strip and rebuild.

Replacement braided wiring loom was supplied
by Jeroen Rothman of The Classic Kabelboom
Company (www.classickabelboomcompany.com)

The disastrous engine failure resulted in the
crankshaft snapping in two! A NOS replacement
was sourced by Ben van Leeuwen Mini Centre.

The latest engine has so far survived over
12,000km of historic rally miles and produces
75bhp with 110lb/ft of torque at the flywheel.
