was there a buzz in the air at the Mopar
booth that would give flight to a real ele-
phant, there were downright fireworks in
that place. Trust me, I know, I was there
for this monumental, game-changing
unveiling.
The press announcement by Mopar
went viral! Subsequently becoming the
hottest topic among podcasts, car shows,
celebrities, and racing legends—as well
as water-cooler talk in pretty much every
automotive shop on the planet.
I don’t want to overdramatize the situation
around the Hellephant, but when
I couldn’t go anywhere without someone
asking me about the engine—”How much
is it?” “Where can I get one?” and so on—
it was a little like the summer of 1980,
when everyone was wondering, “Who shot
J.R.?” For those of you my age, I’m sure
you get the reference, and for you younger
folks, that’s why God made Google.
While comparing the response of the
unveiling of the all-aluminum, 1,000hp,
950–lb-ft of torque, third-generation crate
Hemi to “Who shot J.R.?” may strongly
support hypotheses of the often-rumored
“Wormanesque delusions of grandeur,”
it’s not all that far off. Allow me to explain.
For those of you who don’t know, last
year at the 2018 SEMA ceremonies, the
global president of Mopar, Pietro Gor-
lier, and U.S. president of Mopar, Steve
Beahm, presented me, aka Graveyard
Carz, with the very first Hellephant crate
Hemi. From that moment on, we have
been inundated with mail, email, blog
posts, social-media comments, and the
like all wanting to know what car will
receive this amazing marvel of power.
On April 30, 2019, Graveyard Carz
made the announcement in the “Hellafury”
episode. So now you all know “Who shot
J.R.”—er, I mean, what car is receiving
the Super-Hemi. A beautiful (or will be)
1958 Plymouth Fury, two-door hardtop
that will just happen to look exactly like
the evil 1958 Fury, “Christine”!
I had made up my mind about the
Fury sometime in February 2019. Once
I had decided that was the choice, I made
a post on our Facebook page, inquiring
if anyone knew where there might be a
decent one for sale. This is a tough car
to come up with these days, mostly due
to the silver-screen adaptation of Stephen
King’s novel “Christine.” However, within
a few weeks, I found “Her.” And, yes, in
case you’re wondering, I have referred to
the evil 1958 Fury as “Her,” just the way
Arnie Cunningham and Roland D. LeBay
did, since the day I first laid eyes on her.
You know me, I’m sentimental that way.
Now that I have the car and you all
know what it is, it’s time to get started
