The idle A/F ratio was way too rich


(13:1), even with the idle mixture screws


only three-quarters out from the seat.


We took advantage of the removable


idle air bleeds on the Brawler by


increasing the primary idle air bleeds


from 73s to 79s. The secondary idle air


bleeds were increased from 73s to 80s.


The idle A/F ratio was adjusted to 14.4:1,


with the idle mixture screws a turn and


a half off their seat. The stoichiometric


A/F ratio for E10 87-octane fuel is


approximately 14.08:1, which means the


air bleeds leaned out the A/F very well.


The 273 sounded great at idle, and with


the lean mixture, the rich exhaust odor


was gone.


During the initial WOT runs, there was


a bog when the secondaries opened. We


did several high-gear pulls and adjusted


the vacuum secondaries. After each pull


with a hesitation, we rotated the vacuum


secondary screw in one-eighth of a turn


until the bog was gone. Once we were


bog-free in high gear, we tested the sec-


ondaries in First and Second gear, and


just like high gear, there was no hesita-


tion upon the acceleration.


To cover up a slightly lean A/F ratio at


the initial WOT, we swapped the 0.026-


inch accelerator-pump discharge nozzle


to a 0.030-inch nozzle. The nozzles are


the same style used by all Holley carbu-


retors, and they are swapped in the


same fashion as any Holley. Our


Brawler had the accelerator-pump


discharge nozzle only on the primary


side of the carburetor.
