A LOOK AT SOME NOTEWORTHY REPORTED
TRANSACTIONS OF THE PAST MONTH
2015-16 THE CUP
CONNOR MCDAVID
RPA #’D 1/99:
$36,063 (eBay)
No, it’s not Gem Mint,
but a BGS 9 is still a
premium copy of the
most desirable card
printed in the past 10
years. Add in that this
bears the coveted
01/99 serial number,
has a three-color
patch delivering serious eye appeal and a pristine
on-card autograph and this is a solid investment
with plenty of room for growth as McDavid further
establishes himself among the game’s greats.
1966-67 TOPPS
WRAPPER:
$446.99 (eBay)
We can blame our
moms for throwing
away our old hockey
cards ... but we can
only blame ourselves
for chunking the
wrappers. If only
we’d known what we were throwing away. This wrap-
per, carefully preserved where others were crumpled up
and tossed into the bin, is now more valuable than every
single card in the set save for the Bobby Orr RC it might
have once held. Crazy.
2005-06 THE CUP DUAL SHIELDS MARIO
LEMIEUX / SIDNEY CROSBY: $17,208.99 (eBay)
Looking back now at that first The Cup release and
it’s amazing how many mind-blowing hits Upper Deck
crammed inside it. This 1/1 stunner featured two of
the most desirable patches of the two greatest players
ever to wear the Penguins sweater, including Crosby in
his rookie year. This is that rare card that would draw a
crowd wherever it was displayed.
1924-25 V145-1 BERT CORBEAU
PSA ALTERED:
$15,275 (eBay)
The story of this ultra SP is well known – it was
limited by the producer, Paterson, to ensure that
few collectors could cash in on its offer of a pair
of hockey skates in exchange for a complete set.
But as limited as it was then, it’s virtually impos-
sible now, making this a very rare offering. The
card surface has been recolored in some areas
on the front and back, leading to the Altered
designation from PSA. No mention of the nicely
squared corners and sharp centering, which also
draw attention. Regardless, this is one of the best
examples out there, sure to be the highlight of
someone’s collection.
