BRITISH ATHLETICS GRAND PRIX
(WORLD ATHLETICS TRIALS), Leeds
CALLUM WILKINSON and Heather Lewis won
the men’s and women’s British Athletics
20km races respectively, both achieving PBs
in the process, Gemma Bridge reports.
Wilkinson covered the 20km distance
in 1:21:46, gaining himself a spot on
the British Athletics team for the World
Championships in Doha this September. In
coming second in the British Grand Prix and
British Championships, Tom Bosworth also
secured his place on the Doha start line,
having achieved the qualifying standards
earlier this year.
Wilkinson and Bosworth took to the
front of the race from the start and soon
established a small but significant lead
ahead of the chasing pack.
The Leeds-based athletes went through
the 1km mark in four minutes. The chasing
pack was made up of Teodorico Caporaso
(Italy), Aleksi Ojala (Finland), Irish athletes
David Kenny, Cian McManamon and Brendan
Boyce, and Cameron Corbishley.
At the 4km point, Wilkinson had taken
to the front (16:10), with Bosworth sitting in
second, just a few steps behind (16:25), with
the chasing pack less than 15 seconds adrift.
By the halfway point, Bosworth had caught
Wilkinson and both men crossed the 10km
mark in under 40 minutes. Bosworth held the
lead through the 11km mark but, by the 15kmpoint, Wilkinson retook the front spot. Just
half a lap behind, the race was heating up in
the battle for the Grand Prix bronze medal,
with Caporaso, Ojala, Kenny, McManamon,
Boyce and Corbishley all in with a chance of
a podium finish.Wilkinson maintained his lead over the
final 5km, cruising home in that PB and
course record of 1:21:46, which is the fastest
ever time by a British athlete in the UK.
Bosworth crossed the line in second
place in 1:24:10 while Corbishley finishedfourth, but took the bronze in the British
Athletics race, clocking a PB of 1:24:42 which
moves him to 14th on the UK all-time list.
Tom Partington finished in a highly
respectable fourth in the British Athletics race,
recording a huge PB of 1:32:27.
Wilkinson said: “This is my first national
title and to win it in Leeds in front of my
friends is extra special.”
In the women’s 20km, Heather Lewis
started quickly and established a strong
lead ahead of Welsh compatriot BethanDavies. The Welsh athletes went through 5km
in 22:16 and 23:05 respectively. Erika Kelly
was just behind in third,passing this point
in 24:48. Lewis wnet through the halfway
mark in 46:43 with Davies in a clear second
place in 47:53. Kelly passed the 10km point
in 49:34, holding onto third ahead of Jasmine
Nicholls’ 54:58.
At the 15km point Lewis had developed
a comfortable lead (1:10:42), ahead of Davies
(1:12:18). Kelly had dropped a little further
back and went through this point in 1:15:34
but continued to look strong.
Lewis hung on to win the British Grand
Prix and title, clocking 1:34:49, a PB and the
fifth-fastest ever time by a British athlete.
Davies took the silver medal clocking a
season’s best of 1:36:59. Kelly took third in
1:42:54, retaining the England 20km title she
won last year. The silver medal in the English
Championship race went to Nicholls who
finished in a PB of 1:53:36.
Lewis said:” I am happy with the win and
another PB but gutted not to have the time
for Doha.”
