CHARLOTTE MASON was crowned York and
District Road Race League women’s champion
after her fourth successive victory of the
summer.
The City of York athlete’s win in round
five at a wet Bishop Wilton means no other
woman can overtake her, with the runners’
best four races from six counting for
individual prizes.
There was much talk on the night about
the revised course which meant part of the
traditionally testing 10km route took runners
off-road.
But this could not upset the consistent
Mason, who stayed clear of her nearest rival
Nik Tarrega to take victory in 40:41.
Ian Ellwood (York Postal Harriers)
eventually edged clear of Chris Poulton (York
Acorn), who was crowned champion after
round four, to claim the men’s honours
in 37:28.
The difficulty of the course, with runners
this year heading up Givendale Hill, meant the
respective winning times were three minutes
slower than in the previous round.

VICTORIA Park & Tower Hamlets took both
men’s and women’s trophies but the
fastest laps went elsewhere, Martin Duff
reports.
With four of the top seven times and
third team spot, VP&TH were well representedafterveteran Chris Smith of the Civil Service
led the opening 2-mile lap with a 11:37
clocking.
Then, scything through the field, Chris
Rainsford put in the fastest overall time for
his Standard Chartered team with an 11:25
split that then stood up for the remaining two
circuits of the race.
In the women’s class, Emma
MacAlister-Hall led after the first stage for
a Highgate team, with a second-best effort
of 13:29, as Rachel Baker followed for their A
team. Both fell back as Mandy Dohren brought
Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets home on the
final stage with a 13:57 clocking.
It was JP Morgan’s Lucy Reid who, stating
deep in the field on leg two, stormed through
with the evening’s fastest women’s split
of 12:50.
